CLEAWATER - The Chargers SC Lakewood Ranch U13 Boys clinched the Florida Premier League title this past Friday thanks to a 4-1 victory against the West Florida Flames. The team, coached by Tim Mulqueen and Neil Jenkins, finished 8-1-0 during the five-month season to capture the FPL title, scoring 52 goals and allowing only six.

As FPL champions the team has earned a trip to the U.S. Club Soccer National Premier League (NPL) Champions Cup this July in Aurora, Colorado. The Champions Cup will feature NPL champions from throughout the U.S., competing for a national championship.

Established in 2011 as part of U.S. Club Soccer’s National Premier Leagues (NPL), the Florida Premier League includes 11 clubs in the U-13 through U-18 boys and girls age groups. Other clubs include Boca United, FC America, IMG Academy, Jacksonville FC, Kendall SC, Orlando City Youth Soccer, Space Coast United SC, Tampa Bay United SC, the West Florida Flames, and Weston FC.

US Club Soccer established the NPL in 2011 as a platform to provide the highest level of competition in given geographical areas. Nine leagues kicked off play in September 2011 as part of the NPL’s inaugural season. The season came to a close in July at the 2012 NPL Champions Cup, held in Waukegan, Ill., featuring league champions from across the country. Five teams from three leagues were crowned NPL national champions.

The NPL continued to expand entering its second season of competition, featuring 17 leagues all across the United States at the start of the 2012-13 season.
